Typically found in shallow coastal waters, estuaries, and bays, from nearshore to depths of about 60 meters (200 feet).

Environment

Prefers soft bottoms (sand, mud, shell hash) where it can forage for benthic invertebrates. Commonly found in seagrass beds, tidal creeks, and near oyster reefs. Juveniles are highly dependent on estuarine nursery habitats.

Geographic range

Western Atlantic Ocean, from Massachusetts south to northern Florida, and throughout the Gulf of Mexico to the Bay of Campeche, Mexico. Most abundant from Chesapeake Bay to northern Florida.
