Environment

Demersal, inhabiting rocky reefs, kelp beds, and areas with mixed sand and rubble bottoms. Juveniles may be found in shallower, more sheltered waters, while adults prefer deeper, more exposed reef systems.

Geographic range

Endemic to the temperate waters of New Zealand, including the North and South Islands, Stewart Island, and the Chatham Islands. Also found around the waters of southeastern Australia (Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales).
