Geographic range

Widely distributed in the North Atlantic Ocean (from the western Atlantic off Canada and the USA to the eastern Atlantic off Europe and North Africa) and the Southern Hemisphere (off South America, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand). There are two recognized populations: North Atlantic and Southern Hemisphere, which are genetically distinct.
