Environment

Primarily inhabits seagrass beds, oyster reefs, salt marshes, and other structured shallow-water habitats. Juveniles are particularly abundant in seagrass meadows, which provide shelter and abundant food. Adults may move to deeper coastal waters.

Geographic range

Western Atlantic Ocean, from Massachusetts south to Florida, throughout the Gulf of Mexico, and along the coast of Mexico to the Yucatán Peninsula. Also found in Bermuda and the Caribbean Sea.
