Primarily epipelagic and oceanic, inhabiting surface waters down to approximately 100 meters (330 feet), but can dive deeper.

Environment

Open ocean, tropical and subtropical waters, typically found offshore near continental shelves, islands, and seamounts. Prefers waters above 24°C (75°F).

Geographic range

Indo-Pacific Ocean, from the east coast of Africa to the central Pacific, including the Red Sea, Indian Ocean, and Pacific Ocean. Less common in the Atlantic, where it is replaced by the Blue Marlin (Makaira nigricans).
