Environment

Prefers slow-moving or still waters such as lakes, reservoirs, sloughs, and backwaters of rivers. Thrives in areas with dense aquatic vegetation (e.g., tules, cattails, submerged macrophytes) which provide cover from predators and ambush points for prey. Can tolerate a range of turbidity and substrate types, but often associated with muddy or silty bottoms.

Geographic range

Endemic to California, primarily found in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta system, Clear Lake, and other isolated drainages in the Central Valley and coastal California. Historically more widespread, but populations have become fragmented.
