Geographic range

The wild-type Hypostomus plecostomus is native to tropical South America, particularly the Amazon Basin and other river systems in Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. The albino variety is exclusively a captive-bred form and does not occur naturally in the wild.
