Environment

Prefers slow-moving or stagnant waters such as swamps, marshes, ditches, floodplains, and muddy river backwaters. During dry seasons, it can burrow into mud or migrate overland to find water.

Geographic range

Widespread across tropical South America, including the Orinoco, Amazon, and Paraná river basins, as well as coastal drainages of the Guianas, Trinidad, and Tobago. Introduced populations exist in various other regions, including parts of North America (e.g., Florida) and Asia.
