Environment

Prefers cool, clear to turbid waters of lakes, ponds, slow-moving rivers, and estuaries. Often found over soft bottoms (sand, silt, mud) but can also inhabit areas with gravel or rocky substrates. Tolerant of a wide range of water quality conditions, including low oxygen levels and moderate pollution.

Geographic range

Native to a vast area of Eurasia, from Great Britain and Western Europe eastward across Russia to Siberia. Introduced and invasive in parts of North America, particularly the Great Lakes basin and some associated waterways.
