Key differences: While also a 'bird wrasse' with a similar body shape and snout, *G. caeruleus* males are uniformly blue to blue-green without the distinct pale band behind the pectoral fin seen in *G. varius*. Females of *G. caeruleus* are typically dark brown to black with a white belly, lacking the reddish tones or distinct spotting often seen in *G. varius* females. *G. caeruleus* is primarily found in the Indian Ocean, while *G. varius* has a broader Indo-Pacific distribution.
