Typically found in shallow coastal waters, from the intertidal zone down to about 20 meters (65 feet), occasionally deeper to 30 meters (100 feet).

Environment

Prefers rocky reefs, kelp forests, tide pools, jetties, piers, and other areas with abundant algal growth. Juveniles are often found in very shallow tide pools.

Geographic range

Eastern Pacific Ocean, from Monterey Bay, California, south to Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Most abundant in Southern California and Baja California.
