Typically found in shallow to moderate depths (0.5-2 meters) of streams and rivers.

Environment

Prefers clear, cool, well-oxygenated, forested streams and rivers with stable flows. Often associated with areas of good riparian vegetation, undercut banks, root mats, and coarse substrates (gravel, cobbles, boulders) that provide cover. Can be found in both lowland and upland areas, but generally avoids open, exposed habitats.

Geographic range

Endemic to New Zealand. Widely distributed throughout both the North and South Islands, as well as Stewart Island and some smaller offshore islands. Absent from some drier eastern regions of the South Island.
