Environment

Prefers slow-flowing to still waters in lowland streams, rivers, wetlands, and lakes. They are often associated with dense riparian vegetation, submerged logs, undercut banks, and other forms of instream cover. They require cool, well-oxygenated water and are sensitive to habitat degradation, particularly siltation and loss of riparian cover.

Geographic range

Endemic to New Zealand, found on both the North and South Islands, as well as Stewart Island. Their distribution is patchy and often restricted to remnant areas of suitable habitat.
