Typically found at depths ranging from 0 to 1,280 meters (0-4,200 feet), most commonly between 50 and 400 meters (160-1,300 feet).

Environment

Demersal, inhabiting continental shelves and slopes. Prefers soft bottoms (sand, mud) but can also be found over rocky substrates. Often associated with areas of strong currents and upwellings.

Geographic range

North Pacific Ocean, from the Yellow Sea and Sea of Japan, across the Bering Sea, Gulf of Alaska, and down the west coast of North America to southern California (rarely south of Oregon).
