Environment

Prefers clear, cool to warm waters of large lakes, reservoirs, and slow-moving rivers. Associated with dense submerged vegetation, fallen timber, rock piles, and other ambush cover. Requires large areas of shallow, vegetated spawning habitat.

Geographic range

Native to the Great Lakes region, the St. Lawrence River, and the upper Mississippi River basin in North America. Its range extends from northern Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, eastward through Ontario and Quebec, and south into parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Kentucky. Stocked populations exist outside this native range.
