Prefers clear to slightly turbid, slow-moving or still waters with abundant aquatic vegetation (e.g., submerged weeds, lily pads, cattails). Found in vegetated lakes, ponds, sluggish streams, backwaters of rivers, and swamps. Requires cover for ambush predation.

Geographic range

Primarily central and eastern North America. Its range extends from the Great Lakes basin south through the Mississippi River drainage to the Gulf Coast states, and east to the Atlantic slope drainages from New York to Florida. Specifically, it is found from southern Ontario and Michigan, west to eastern Kansas and Oklahoma, and south to the Gulf Coast of Texas and Florida.
