Environment

Primarily associated with coral reefs, rocky bottoms, seagrass beds, and occasionally mangroves. Juveniles often inhabit seagrass beds and shallow reef areas, while adults prefer deeper reef structures, ledges, and caves.

Geographic range

Western Atlantic Ocean, from Bermuda and Florida (USA) south through the Caribbean Sea, including the Bahamas, Greater and Lesser Antilles, and along the coast of Central and South America to Brazil. Absent from the Gulf of Mexico, except for the extreme southern tip of Florida and the Florida Keys.
