Environment

Prefers rocky bottoms, caves, wrecks, and other complex hard-bottom habitats. Juveniles may be found in shallower coastal areas, including seagrass beds, while adults inhabit deeper reefs and rocky outcrops. They are solitary and territorial.

Geographic range

Widely distributed in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean, including the Mediterranean Sea, the coast of Portugal, the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, and along the African coast from Mauritania to South Africa. Also found in the Western Indian Ocean, including Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands, and in the Southwest Atlantic off Brazil and Uruguay.
