Environment

Associated with coral reefs, rocky outcrops, shipwrecks, estuaries, and mangrove areas. Juveniles are often found in brackish estuaries and mangrove swamps, moving to deeper reef habitats as they mature. They prefer areas with caves, ledges, and other structures for shelter.

Geographic range

Widespread in the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa across to the Pitcairn Islands, north to southern Japan, and south to Australia (Queensland and New South Wales).
