Typically found in shallow coastal waters from 5 to 50 meters (16 to 164 feet), but can be found deeper, occasionally down to 100 meters (328 feet).

Environment

Prefers rocky reefs, coral reefs, shipwrecks, artificial reefs, bridge pilings, and mangrove estuaries. Juveniles are often found in mangrove prop roots and estuarine areas, providing critical nursery habitat.

Geographic range

Western Atlantic Ocean from Florida (USA) and the Gulf of Mexico, throughout the Caribbean Sea, and along the coast of Brazil. Also found in the Eastern Atlantic along the coast of West Africa from Senegal to Congo.
