Environment

Inhabits coral reefs, rocky bottoms, rubble zones, and occasionally seagrass beds. Juveniles may be found in shallower, more protected areas. They are often associated with caves, crevices, and other shelters.

Geographic range

Widespread throughout the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa eastward to the Line Islands and Tuamotu Archipelago, northward to southern Japan, and southward to Australia (including Lord Howe Island) and New Caledonia.
