Environment

Prefers slow-moving or still waters of swamps, bogs, acidic ponds, small streams, and vegetated lake margins. They are often associated with dense aquatic vegetation (e.g., Sphagnum moss, emergent grasses, lily pads), submerged logs, and leaf litter, which provide cover and foraging opportunities. They thrive in clear to darkly stained (tannic) waters with soft, acidic substrates.

Geographic range

Native to the Atlantic coastal plain of eastern North America, ranging from southern New Hampshire south to central Florida. Its distribution is somewhat disjunct, with populations concentrated in specific coastal drainages.
