Environment

Highly euryhaline, inhabiting a wide range of coastal and estuarine environments including salt marshes, tidal creeks, mangrove swamps, lagoons, and shallow bays. They can tolerate salinities ranging from freshwater to hypersaline conditions (up to 140 ppt) and temperatures from near freezing to over 100°F (38°C). Often found among submerged vegetation, detritus, or muddy bottoms.

Geographic range

Atlantic coast of North America, from Nova Scotia, Canada, south to Florida, and throughout the Gulf of Mexico to northeastern Mexico. Also found in Bermuda and the Caribbean islands.
