Environment

Prefers clear, cool, well-oxygenated headwater streams and small to medium-sized rivers with moderate to swift currents. Commonly found in riffles, runs, and pools over gravel, rubble, or bedrock substrates. Requires clean water and is sensitive to siltation and pollution.

Geographic range

Native to eastern North America. Its range extends from the Susquehanna River drainage in Pennsylvania south through the Appalachian Mountains to the Savannah River drainage in Georgia and South Carolina, and west to the upper Tennessee River drainage in Tennessee and Alabama. Isolated populations exist in some Atlantic slope drainages.
