Intolerant of turbidity and siltation.

Geographic range

Primarily found in the Great Lakes basin and upper Ohio River basin in North America. Its distribution is disjunct, with populations in southern Ontario (Canada), New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky (USA).
