Environment

Rocky reefs, seagrass beds (Posidonia oceanica), and other coastal habitats with ample shelter and plankton availability. They often form large, dense schools in the water column above these structures.

Geographic range

Eastern Atlantic Ocean, including the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, and along the coast of West Africa from Portugal to Angola. Also found in the Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Azores.
