Environment

Prefers rocky reefs, seagrass beds (Posidonia oceanica), and areas with abundant algal growth. Forms large, dense schools, especially juveniles, often hovering above the substrate to feed on plankton. Adults are more territorial during breeding.

Geographic range

Eastern Atlantic Ocean, from Portugal to the Gulf of Guinea, including the Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Azores. Widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.
