Widely but patchily distributed in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Known from Norway, Scotland, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, Madeira, Morocco, Mauritania, and potentially other areas in the eastern Atlantic; off New England and the Mid-Atlantic Bight in the western Atlantic. In the Pacific, it is found off Japan, Taiwan, Australia (New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania), New Zealand, and California.
