Associated with a variety of structures including artificial reefs, wrecks, pilings, jetties, mangrove roots, and natural rock formations. They are also found over sandy and muddy bottoms, often near structure. Juveniles may inhabit estuaries and shallow protected bays.

Western Atlantic Ocean, from Massachusetts, USA, south to southeastern Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
