Several fish can be confused with Basking Shark. Here are the key differences.

Species often confused with {name}

Whale Shark

Rhincodon typus

Key differences: The Whale Shark has a terminal mouth, but it is not as wide as the Basking Shark's. It has a distinctive checkerboard pattern of spots and stripes on its body, whereas the Basking Shark is uniformly dark. Whale Sharks also have prominent ridges along their back, which Basking Sharks lack. Their gill slits are much shorter and do not encircle the head.

Megamouth Shark

Megachasma pelagios

Key differences: The Megamouth Shark is much rarer and typically found in deeper waters. While it also has a large mouth, it is more bulbous and less elongated than the Basking Shark's. Its coloration is generally darker, and it lacks the extremely long gill slits of the Basking Shark. Its head shape is also distinctly different, being more rounded and less conical.
