Environment

Associated with coral reefs, rocky bottoms, rubble zones, and seagrass beds. Juveniles often inhabit shallower, more protected areas. They are typically solitary and territorial, seeking shelter in crevices and under ledges.

Geographic range

Western Atlantic Ocean, from Bermuda and Florida (USA) south through the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and along the coast of South America to Brazil. Also found in the eastern Atlantic around Ascension Island and St. Helena.
