Primarily associated with coral reefs, seagrass beds, and sandy flats adjacent to reefs. Also found around island shelves and continental slopes.

Geographic range

Western Atlantic Ocean, from Florida (USA) and the Bahamas, throughout the Caribbean Sea, and south to Brazil. Its range includes the Gulf of Mexico, though less common there.
