Typically found from the surface down to 100 meters (330 feet), occasionally deeper. Juveniles are often found in shallower coastal waters, estuaries, and even freshwater for short periods.

Environment

Primarily pelagic and coastal, inhabiting coral reefs, rocky reefs, lagoons, estuaries, and open oceanic waters. Juveniles frequently form large schools in sheltered bays and near shorelines, while adults are more solitary or form smaller groups in deeper reef environments and offshore banks.

Geographic range

Widespread in the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa across to the Hawaiian Islands and the Marquesas, north to southern Japan, and south to Australia and New Caledonia. Also found in the eastern Pacific from Baja California to Ecuador, including the Galapagos Islands.
