Environment

Primarily pelagic, inhabiting coastal waters, offshore reefs, open ocean, and sometimes estuaries. Often found schooling near structure such as reefs, wrecks, buoys, and sargassum mats.

Geographic range

Widespread in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic Ocean. This includes the western Atlantic from Nova Scotia, Canada, south to Brazil, throughout the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. In the eastern Atlantic, it ranges from Mauritania to Angola, including the Canary Islands and Cape Verde. Also found in the Mediterranean Sea, having entered via the Strait of Gibraltar.
