Environment

Inhabits coral reefs, rocky reefs, seagrass beds, and mangrove areas. Often found near vertical structures such as gorgonians, sea whips, or among the branches of corals, where they can effectively camouflage.

Geographic range

Widespread in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic Ocean. This includes the western Atlantic from Florida, Bermuda, and the Bahamas, throughout the Caribbean Sea, and along the coast of Central and South America to Brazil. In the eastern Atlantic, it is found around oceanic islands such as Ascension Island and St. Helena, and occasionally off the coast of West Africa.
