Geographic range

Native to Central and Eastern Europe, extending from the Rhine and Elbe basins eastward through the Danube, Dnieper, Don, Volga, and Ural river systems, reaching into the Caspian and Aral Sea basins. Also present in some Baltic Sea drainages. Introduced to some Western European countries.
