Coastal pelagic and inshore waters, including rocky reefs, sandy beaches, estuaries, and open ocean. Prefers areas with strong currents and abundant baitfish.

Geographic range

Southern Australia, from southern Queensland around to Western Australia (north to about Kalbarri), and throughout New Zealand waters. The Western Australian population (Arripis truttaceus) is now recognized as a distinct species, Western Australian Salmon.
