Environment

Prefers sandy or muddy bottoms, often near estuaries, river mouths, and coastal lagoons. Also found over rocky reefs and in open water. Tolerant of a wide range of salinities, often entering brackish waters.

Geographic range

Eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the English Channel south to Mauritania, including the Canary Islands. Also widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. Its range has expanded northward in recent decades, possibly due to climate change.
