Environment

Prefers large rivers, lakes, and reservoirs with soft bottoms (sand, silt, mud) where it can forage for benthic invertebrates. Tolerant of a wide range of turbidity and current conditions, but generally avoids swift currents. Often found near submerged structures, drop-offs, and areas with abundant prey.

Geographic range

Widely distributed throughout the central and eastern United States, extending into southern Canada and northern Central America. Its range spans from the Hudson Bay drainage in Canada south to Guatemala, and from the Appalachian Mountains west to the Rocky Mountains.
