Primarily demersal, found at depths ranging from 20 meters (65 feet) to over 2,700 meters (8,850 feet), though most commonly between 300-1,500 meters (1,000-5,000 feet). Juveniles are found in shallower waters.

Environment

Cold, deep-water environments, typically over soft bottoms (mud, sand) but also found near rocky outcrops and continental slopes. They prefer temperatures between 2-8°C.

Geographic range

North Pacific Ocean, from Baja California, Mexico, north along the coast of North America to Alaska, across the Bering Sea, and south along the Asian coast to Japan.
