Environment

Prefers sandy or gravelly bottoms in coastal waters, bays, estuaries, and nearshore areas. Often found in areas with strong currents and good water circulation. They are demersal when buried but pelagic when schooling.

Geographic range

North Pacific Ocean, from the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands south along the coasts of Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California (as far south as Baja California). Also found along the Asian coast from the Bering Sea south to Japan and Korea.
