Environment

Prefers clear, cool to warm waters of streams, rivers, and lakes with rocky bottoms, gravel, or sand. Often associated with submerged structures such as logs, boulders, aquatic vegetation, and undercut banks. Tolerates some turbidity but thrives in clear conditions.

Geographic range

Native to eastern and central North America, primarily in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River basin, Hudson Bay basin, and Mississippi River basin. Its range extends from Quebec and Ontario south to northern Georgia and Alabama, and west to Oklahoma and Kansas. Introduced populations exist outside this native range.
