Environment

Geographic range

Native to the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coasts of North America. Its range extends from the Mississippi River basin (including its major tributaries like the Ohio and Missouri Rivers) eastward along the Gulf Coast to Florida, and northward along the Atlantic coast to New York. Historically, they were found further north, but damming and habitat alteration have restricted their range.
