Prefers sheltered coastal bays, estuaries, tidal creeks, and sometimes penetrates into freshwater. Often found over sandy or muddy bottoms, and around seagrass beds or mangroves. Forms schools, especially when young.

Geographic range

Southern Australia, including Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, and New South Wales. Also found in New Zealand.
