Primarily found in shallow coastal waters, typically 0.5 to 10 meters (1.5 to 33 feet), but can be found in deeper waters (up to 100 meters) during spawning or migration.

Environment

Tropical and subtropical marine environments, including shallow sand flats, seagrass beds, mangrove estuaries, lagoons, and occasionally coral reefs. Prefers clear, warm water with sandy or muddy bottoms where it can forage.

Geographic range

Widespread in tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic Ocean, including the western Atlantic from North Carolina (USA) to Brazil, the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and Bermuda. Also found in the eastern Atlantic off the coast of West Africa. In the Pacific, it occurs from California (USA) to Peru, including Hawaii, and across the Indo-Pacific region.
