Environment

Primarily estuarine, inhabiting rivers, estuaries, coastal lakes, and lagoons. They are highly euryhaline, tolerating a wide range of salinities from pure freshwater to full marine conditions, though they are most commonly found in brackish environments. They prefer areas with structure such as submerged timber, rock bars, jetties, bridge pylons, and weed beds. Juveniles often utilize mangrove and saltmarsh habitats as nursery areas.

Geographic range

Endemic to southern Australia, from the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria, westward through South Australia, and into Western Australia as far north as the Murchison River.
