Primarily epipelagic, inhabiting the upper 200 meters (650 feet) of the water column, but can be found deeper. Typically found near the surface around oceanic islands, reefs, and offshore banks, as well as in open ocean.

Pelagic, oceanic, and neritic. Prefers clear, warm, tropical and subtropical waters. Often associated with floating debris, sargassum lines, and current breaks.

Geographic range

Circumglobal in tropical and subtropical oceans, including the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Absent from the Mediterranean Sea and polar waters. Found from approximately 40°N to 40°S latitude.
