Environment

Inhabits coral reefs, rocky shores, jetties, pilings, and other hard-bottomed areas. Juveniles often form large schools around floating debris or sargassum mats. Adults are more territorial and associated with specific reef structures.

Geographic range

Widespread in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic Ocean. This includes the western Atlantic from Rhode Island, USA, south to Brazil, throughout the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. In the eastern Atlantic, it is found from Portugal and the Azores south to Angola, including the Canary Islands and Cape Verde.
