Environment

Prefers slow-moving or still waters such as large rivers, canals, lakes, reservoirs, and oxbow lakes. Thrives in eutrophic conditions with soft, muddy or silty bottoms rich in organic matter and aquatic vegetation. Tolerates low oxygen levels better than many other fish species.

Geographic range

Widespread across Europe, from the British Isles and Scandinavia in the west to the Ural Mountains in the east. Its range extends south to the Alps and the northern Balkans. Introduced to some areas outside its native range.
