Environment

Large, slow-flowing rivers, deep lakes, and reservoirs with clear to moderately turbid water. Prefers areas with abundant zooplankton. Often associated with open water rather than dense vegetation.

Geographic range

Native to Eastern Europe and parts of Western Asia. Its distribution extends from the basins of the Baltic Sea (e.g., Vistula, Oder), through the Black Sea basin (e.g., Danube, Dnieper, Don, Volga), and into the Caspian Sea basin (e.g., Volga, Ural). It has also been introduced to some Western European waters.
